伊拉克政府軍與伊國北部什葉派民兵，11日對伊北遜尼派聖戰恐怖組織「伊斯蘭國」（IS）發動歷來最大規模的攻勢，收復已故獨裁者哈珊總統的家鄉提克里特部分地區，並挺進市中心，於多處地點與IS戰士激戰。
美國主導的國際聯軍，日前也已截斷IS在敘利亞和伊拉克之間的重要通訊與補給線。
伊軍表示，10日起已陸續奪回去年夏季遭IS占領的提克里特若干區域，但IS為阻撓政府軍與民兵的推進，將該市跨越底格里斯河的唯一聯外橋樑炸毀，並在市區要道埋設炸藥，制高點也部署狙擊手。
攻進提克里特之前，政府軍拿下北郊戰略城鎮艾阿蘭。鎮長朱布里說，安全部隊、當地部落戰士與「大眾動員」民兵組織已全面掌控艾阿蘭。
鎮民也歡慶回歸伊拉克版圖，期望政府軍以艾阿蘭為跳板，收復提克里特與伊國第二大城摩蘇爾。
提克里特位於伊國首都巴格達西北方約140公里處，是薩拉丁省首府，伊軍若成功奪回，將大幅提振對抗IS相關宣傳的聲勢。但戰事同時也考驗政府軍對於什葉派部落民兵的信任程度，以及他們掌控這些武裝民兵的能力。
什葉派民兵的襄助，是伊軍當前一鼓作氣強勢反攻的關鍵。
